Home is really two categories sharing a shelf. Soft goods are textile problems — shrinkage, colourfastness, fill. Hard goods are volume problems — cube, moisture, joints and breakage. Sourcing a coherent range means running both at once and shipping them together.
Two supply chains under one category name
Nothing in a home range shares a supplier. A cushion is a sewn textile product made by a soft-goods factory and priced by material and labour; a side table is a wood or metal product made by a carpentry or metal plant and priced by material, finish and — decisively — by how much of a container it occupies. On bulky hard goods the freight can approach or exceed the factory price, which means the design decision that matters most is whether the item ships flat-packed, nested or assembled. A beautiful one-piece frame can be commercially impossible for exactly that reason.
Wood behaves like a living material long after it leaves the factory. Moisture content at the time of production is what decides whether joints stay tight in a heated European home, because timber that was in equilibrium in a humid climate will shrink when it arrives somewhere dry. That is the mechanism behind most cracked panels and loose joints in imported furniture, and it is controllable — by specifying moisture content, by choosing joinery that tolerates movement, and by verifying rather than trusting.
Soft goods have their own set. Colour has to hold through light, washing and rubbing, and a woven or printed textile drifts between lots in exactly the way apparel fabric does. Fill weight and foam density are what a customer reads as quality in a cushion or a seat, and they are also the easiest thing in the category to quietly reduce between the sample and the third reorder. Rugs and handloom textiles add variability by nature, so the specification has to state an acceptable range rather than a single value.
Ceramics and glass sit in a third place again: tooling per shape, kiln or furnace capacity that constrains lead time, a loss rate that is normal rather than a defect, and glaze or colour variation that is inherent to firing. And breakage means packaging is a functional part of the product — the item that arrives broken cost you the unit, the freight and the customer.

Quality, compliance and risk
The checks that apply here most often. What your product needs is decided per project.
The failures in this category are mostly delayed. A joint loosens after a winter of central heating, a glaze crazes after a few dishwasher cycles, a cushion flattens on the third reorder because fill weight drifted, a printed textile fades on a sunny wall. None of them are visible at a final inspection that checks appearance, which is why the quality plan has to include specified physical properties and named tests — moisture content, joint and load strength, fill weight, rub resistance, colourfastness to light and washing — rather than only a visual standard.
Variation deserves its own conversation. Fired ceramics, natural stone, handloom textiles and solid wood all vary by nature, so the useful specification states an acceptable range and provides limit samples at each end of it. Without that, every inspection turns into an argument about whether a genuinely normal piece is a defect, and both sides are partly right.
On compliance, the picture depends heavily on the product. Lighting is an electrical product with its own safety and marking obligations and should be treated as a specialist case rather than as decor. Upholstery flammability requirements differ between markets and are not uniform across the EU. REACH restricts chemicals in consumer goods, which reaches coatings, adhesives, foams and treated textiles; EU rules on deforestation-free commodities affect some wood products, and FSC is a voluntary scheme a supplier chooses rather than the law. Anything intended for children is a stricter regime again. What applies to a specific product needs product-specific assessment, and we say so rather than implying blanket coverage.

The broadest hard-goods capability anywhere — ceramics, glass, metal, lighting components, moulded goods and tooling — which makes it the practical route for a range that spans several materials. The cost is sea transit and the volume of a container of bulky items, so it rewards planning and larger consolidated orders.

Vietnam
A major source of wooden and rattan furniture for European buyers, with strong finishing and increasingly good flat-pack engineering. Hardware and some materials are imported, and moisture control is the thing to specify and verify rather than take on trust.

Genuine depth in rugs, handloom textiles, brass, marble and hand-finished decor, at costs that are hard to match for labour-intensive work. Variation is inherent to hand production, so limit samples and clear acceptance ranges do more here than a tighter tolerance would.

Portugal
A serious ceramics and stoneware base with EU documentation fluency, low minimums and short transit — often the honest answer for a small tabletop or decor range that would be uneconomic to tool and ship from Asia.

Poland and Central Europe
Upholstery, case goods and textile manufacturing within road-freight distance of most of Europe, which changes the economics of bulky products completely. Higher unit costs, far lower freight and far shorter reorder cycles.
Questions about this category
Why is freight such a large part of the cost on furniture?
Because containers are sold by volume and furniture is mostly volume. A product that cannot be flat-packed or nested pays to move its own empty space, so two designs with the same factory price can have very different delivered costs. This is why packing and assembly should be designed at the same time as the product.
Our imported wooden furniture cracked after a winter. What went wrong?
Almost always moisture content. Timber that reached equilibrium in a humid production climate loses moisture in a heated European home and shrinks, which stresses joints and panels. Specifying moisture content at production, choosing joinery that tolerates movement, and verifying before shipment is what prevents it.
Can one supplier make our whole home range?
Rarely, and it is usually a warning sign when one offers to. Textiles, wood, metal and ceramics are different manufacturing disciplines. The workable model is the right supplier per product with sourcing and shipping coordinated centrally, so the range still arrives as one delivery.
How do we handle colour variation in ceramics and natural materials?
By specifying a range instead of a value. Firing, glazing and natural fibre all vary, so the practical approach is an approved reference plus limit samples marking the acceptable extremes, and inspection against that band. It converts an unwinnable dispute into a measurable check.
What minimums should we expect on homeware?
They vary by process rather than by category. Moulded ceramics and glass carry tooling, so the minimum follows the tool; textiles follow the fabric minimum, often per colour; wood and metal are usually driven by set-up and finishing efficiency. A range spanning all three has several different minimums to reconcile, which is part of the planning work.
Do you source lighting?
Lighting is an electrical product with its own safety, marking and documentation obligations, so we treat it as a specialist case that needs product-specific assessment rather than as ordinary decor. Shades, bases and non-electrical components are a more straightforward proposition than a complete electrified fitting.
